Committee on Transportation Security

| |
Oversight legislation to protect transportation security was put together very quickly after 9-11. Airport, seaport and transport law enforcement and Public Safety are a part of the layered security system. We have all had time to learn from our experiences and the continued terrorist threats as highlighted by the most recent event requires America to use its resources in the best manner possible. Law enforcement and public safety officials can offer an expert eye lending a competent and trusted voice to the Administration and Congress in assisting them with their task of evaluating the transportation security environment we are faced with.
In order to address these matters USASP Director Jay Grant will be assembling a number chiefs, command officers and experts from the transportation security law enforcement and public safety departments to evaluate current security issues and concerns. The committee will focus on security best practices and policy recommendations based on need and requirements for any substantial security environment regardless of conditions. Our first meeting will be in Washington DC the week of February. We will plan to offer the report to Congress and the Administration by June 1st. If you are interested in participating please let us know.
We continue our work to protect passengers and cargo in 2010. Tim

Fred V. Morrone memorial 9-11 Award we shall never forget
By Russell Whitmarsh
As Chairman of the Fred V. Morrone Memorial 9-11 Award Committee I am honored to serve and make sure we never forget. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department led by Superintendent of Police and Public Safety Michael Fedorko, are commended for their great assistance. The first two years the event was held in Washington, D.C. where in 2007 we had our inaugural program and gave the first award to former Mayor Rudy Giuliani; in 2008 at our second event our recipient was the Honorable Asa Hutchinson. This years 3rd recipient was Frances Townsend, who served as assistant to the President for homeland security and counterterrorism. As the chief of counterterrorism at the White House she was often portrayed as the glue that kept the intelligence community working cohesively. Her post nine-eleven role was critical in keeping the Nation safe and her efforts were tireless. Her dedication to her country set an example when the need arose. Today, America and the world are safer places because of the work accomplished by Ms. Townsend. We honor her in the name of Fred V. Morrone and the 36 brave officers from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey who perished in the World Trade Towers and to all first responders who gave their lives on nine-eleven and those who serve each and every day.
We look to start the 2010 and 2011 committee efforts soon and look for participation from the departments and recommendations of commercial companies for sponsorships. Contact Russell Whitmarsh at:

SRMX V2 now available
trusted information sharing
Last summer the Security Resource Management Xchange “SRMX” project started to come together. We moved over to a new portal January 1st. The SRMX goal is to bring transportation police and public safety departments together.
Several new features have been added with more to be introduced. We continue to have departments add their command staff to the site and keep information up to date, but now we have added discussion boards and new intelligence and report briefing database and daily email. The USASP Office of Intergovernmental Affairs in coordination with InterPortPolice will host the SRMX site and monitor the content. We encourage your sr. staff and intelligence/CT officers to participate and share.
The SRMX program continues to find funding and upgrade the system to offer analysis and additional benefits. Your input is always greatly appreciated and useful in evaluating what to do next. If you are not on SRMX and qualify please go to
www.SRMX.info and ask to join.
